This role falls within Blackboard’s Learn Operations organization, which is responsible for managing projects and ongoing improvements for our flagship Learn application in both our managed hosting and cloud SaaS offerings.
Specific Responsibilities Will Include
As Associate Database Administrator, you will support multiple databases in traditional hosting and cloud environments for Oracle and PostgreSQL. You will also perform database and system troubleshooting relating to the performance of Blackboard applications.
- Working with migration team to execute cross-platform migration of database and application
- Using basic command line Linux skills to perform various tasks
- Working with various teams to provide database support and troubleshooting for Oracle and PostgreSQL environments
- Developing ad hoc queries in both Oracle and PostgreSQL databases
- Performing routine database maintenance as required
- Enhancing and developing scripts for reporting, data manipulation, and automation of administration tasks
- Reviewing databases for performance issues
- Analyzing databases to proactively identify issues
- Responding to escalations and attending follow-up meetings
- Developing, documenting, and training team members on new solutions or procedures
- Participating in 24x7 on-call rotation
- Working US daytime shifts
The Candidate
- Has 2-4 years of experience supporting large databases
- Has hands-on command line experience with database administration tasks for Oracle and PostgreSQL
- Has excellent problem-solving skills
- Has solid oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrates a willingness to learn and can adapt to a fast-paced environment
- Is skilled in Linux, PostgreSQL, Oracle, performance tuning, and shell scripting
- Can work within a team structure to develop innovative solutions to common issues
- Has experience troubleshooting advanced database issues
- Prior experience working in a DevOps environment is preferred
- Previous experience in the education industry and with e-learning technologies is a plus
- A background in content/knowledge management, digital asset management, as well as with education-related technologies is desired
