This role focuses on Blackboard Learn, a product in which we pride ourselves on creating well-designed web and mobile solutions to support learners, instructors, and administrators. Blackboard Learn allows learners and instructors to access online educational experiences wherever and whenever they want through web and mobile devices. Our technology helps instructors breathe life into educational content, brings efficiency to day-to-day tasks, and empowers instructors with tools to engage and assess every learner. We help motivate learners by promoting collaboration, communication, and connections with their peers and instructors.
This role falls within Blackboard’s Learn Operations organization, which is responsible for managing projects and ongoing improvements for our flagship Learn application in both our managed hosting and cloud SaaS offerings. As Database Administrator, you will be responsible for supporting multiple databases in traditional hosting and cloud environments for Oracle and Postgres. You will perform database and system troubleshooting related to the performance of Blackboard applications. You will work with the migration team to execute cross-platform migration of database and application. You will use basic command line Linux skills to perform various tasks and develop ad hoc queries in both Oracle and Postgres databases.
Additionally, you will perform routine database maintenance, reviewing databases for performance issues and analyzing databases to proactively identify issues. You will enhance and develop scripts for reporting, data manipulation, and automation of administration tasks. You will respond to escalations and attend follow-up meetings. You will also develop, document, and train team members on new solutions or procedures.
The Candidate
- Has light experience with database administration tasks for Oracle and Postgres
- Is familiar with troubleshooting advanced database issues
- Is willing to learn and adapt to a fast-paced environment
- Can work within a team structure to develop innovative solutions to common issues
- Has light experience working in a DevOps environment
- Has an understanding of Linux, Postgres, Oracle, performance tuning, and shell scripting
- Has excellent oral and written communication skills
- Can participate in 24/7 on call rotation
- Is willing to work US daytime shifts as needed
- Previous experience in the education industry and with e-learning technologies is a plus
- A background in content/ knowledge management, digital asset management, and with educational technology is preferred
