Job Description – Technician (Power Smart Meter)

A Power Smart Meter Technician is responsible for installing, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting smart electricity meters at residential, commercial, and industrial consumer premises. The technician ensures accurate meter operation, data communication, and compliance with safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Install and replace conventional electricity meters with smart meters.

• Configure, commission, and activate smart meters.

• Test meter accuracy and communication functionality.

• Inspect electrical connections and ensure safe installations.

• Diagnose and resolve meter faults and communication issues.

• Record installation details, meter readings, and service reports using mobile apps or tablets.

• Perform routine maintenance and meter replacement activities.

• Educate consumers on smart meter usage and benefits.

• Follow electrical safety regulations and company procedures.

• Coordinate with supervisors and utility companies for field operations.

Required Skills

• Knowledge of electrical wiring and meter connections.

• Understanding of single-phase and three-phase power systems.

• Ability to use testing instruments and handheld devices.

• Basic knowledge of smart meter communication technologies (AMI/AMR).

• Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

• Good customer communication skills.

• Familiarity with mobile applications and digital reporting tools.

Educational Qualification

• ITI Electrician / Wireman

• Diploma in Electrical Engineering (preferred)

• 10th/12th pass with electrical field experience may also be accepted by some employers.

Working Conditions

• Field-based job involving travel to customer locations.

• Work at residential, commercial, and industrial sites.

• May require outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

• Use of safety equipment such as gloves, helmets, and protective gear.
