Alphonsa College, Pala, Kottayam District is one of the pioneer institutions for the higher education of women in the state of Kerala. It perpetuates the sacred memory of St. Alphonsa, the contemplative mystic whose saintly life of love and service has always been an inspiration and source of strength for the people around her. She was beatified by His Holiness Pope John Paul II when he visited India in 1986. Saint Alphonsa was canonized by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on 12 October 2008. She is the first Indian woman to be raised to the Altar by the Catholic Church.
