Responsibility:

Lays and sets ceramic, slate, marble and glass tiles to internal/external walls and floors, using glues, grout and cement to provide protective and/or decorative finishes.

Main duties:

Read and examines plans for job.
Estimate materials required.
Measures and mark out surfaces in preparation of laying of tiles, especially for decorative patterns.
Prepare wall/floor surfaces by removing old tiles, grout, cement and any other adhesive, apply plaster to cover cracks and fill up holes, sand, smooth and level surface to get it ready for new tiling to be laid.
Apply sealants and waterproofing systems where required.
Undertake screeding where required by mixing sand and cement for floor tiling.
Where required, form contours in bathroom floors to correct uneven flooring and facilitate correct flow of water into drains.
Mix and spread selected adhesive and lay each tile carefully and checking the alignment before setting tiles into position.
Use various power or hand tools such as angle grinders and tile cutters to cut and shape tiles required for corners and edges, and to fit around irregular objects such as fittings, stairs, columns and piping.
Once tiles are dry and set, mix up the required grout and apply evenly to fill out joints. Remove excess grout and clean tiled area.
