Who We Are
Girl Effect is a creative non-profit empowering girls to change their lives.
Started by the Nike Foundation, we are experts in media, mobile, brand and international development; a unique mix of skills that we use to solve global problems in a different way.
We work across the world in places where girls are marginalised and vulnerable. We create youth brands and mobile platforms for young people in ways that they love and interact with. We deliver these through the media and mobile tech that we use every day - from apps that build skills, to TV dramas they explore virtual issues, to magazines written by girls.
Girl Effect in India - Journey So Far
Chhaa Jaa is a digital-first youth brand that inspires, informs and equips girls in India with the right skills and confidence to navigate adolescence - from accessing information about sexual and reproductive health, to negotiating with parents about choices for their education, to preparing to find a first job. As part of the brand is a closed, girls only, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) Facebook group called Bak Bak Gang where girls and women above the age of 16 are welcome to join. This group is built to provide adolescent girls and young women with a safe space to talk and share their curiosities, stories and questions around their bodies and relationships without any judgement, shame, stigma or taboo. Chhaa Jaa, and as a part of the brand, Bak Bak Gang, seeks to inspire every girl to write her own story. As a part of the community, girls have honest and frank conversations around issues and challenges that they face in their daily lives. The role requires someone who is deeply motivated to work in the space of empowering adolescent girls and young women. Someone who has an understanding of building a community centered around social issues facing young girls and can actively support and encourage them to talk openly and ultimately nudge them to take control of their lives and bodies and hopefully encourage others (amongst the group, their friends and even their communities) to do the same.
This is a community management role with ample opportunity to grow and learn how to scale online communities without losing their essence or inherent safety. It demands that one be open, agile, vigilant within a fast paced, constantly evolving environment, that is powered by honest conversations between young people themselves that ultimately help them make better health and future choices.
